Having a bowl of oatmeal or oat-based cereal for breakfast is an easy yet effective way to lower your cholesterol. One serve should give you 2 to 3 grams of soluble fiber. You can add a banana or some strawberries for better flavor and more vitamins. Current nutrition guidelines recommend getting 20 to 35 grams of fiber a day, with at least 5 to 10 grams coming from soluble fiber. However, the average American only gets about half that amount.
