Overview

Metabolic syndrome, which is a group of conditions that can give rise to heart disease, diabetes, and stroke, is increasingly common, and almost one-third of U.S. adults have fallen to its victim. The conditions consist of the following five components:

  • High blood sugar
  • High blood pressure
  • Low levels of HDL cholesterol in the blood
  • Abnormal high level of triglycerides
  • Excess body fat around the waist or "apple-shaped" body

It doesn't mean you have metabolic syndrome if you have just one of these conditions, and it's diagnosed when you develop three or more of these risk factors.
