Did you know that tomatoes were feared by the Europeans when encountered on their earliest visits to the New World? This suspiciously red-colored fruit seems to signal a red light on those who come close. However, it is not the red, fully-ripened tomatoes they should be wary of, but the unripe ones along with their leaves, roots, and stem. These components of a tomato plant are rich in tomatine, an alkaloid that's mildly toxic to humans and can cause gastrointestinal distress when accidentally eaten.
