Debunking common myths about juice cleanses

Detox. With no specified toxins that juices can help flush out of the human body, juice cleanses companies target their products as an all-in-one cure for our modern life saturated with mercury in seafood, smog in the air, pollutants in rivers, etc. According to the National Institute of Health, there is no compelling evidence to support the detoxing effect of veggies and fruit juices. Even if replacing fast foods with juices means limiting alcohol, refined sugar, and processed food intake, it has nothing to do with eliminating toxins that have already been accumulated in our body. In fact, our body has its own detox organs (the liver and the kidney) to get rid of unwanted wastes through sweat, stool, and urine. If you really need to detox your body with outside help, you would be hospitalized to eliminate the life-threatening amount of toxins.

Weight loss. Most people do lose several pounds after consuming juices only for several days because their daily caloric needs can't be met. According to the National Institute of Health, the initial weight loss is likely to disappear after people continue their normal eating again.
