Blood-Soaked
Nutmeg is native to Banda Islands in eastern Indonesia. The rich, volcanic soil, abundant rainfall, and sufficient sunlight nourish the nutmeg and serve as the main source of income for the locals. Like other spices that were sought after by European powers, a pound of nutmeg worth seven fat oxen. When the Dutch first arrived in the Banda sea in search of this valuable spice, they were greeted warmly by the locals with flotilla canoes. But soon, they started genocide because the locals were unwilling to give out their lands. The local population plummeted from 15,000 to only 1,000. The Europeans also smuggled nutmeg seeds to break the monopoly of Banda Islands. Nutmeg is now grown in tropical regions like India and the Caribbean. Meanwhile, the survived natives have to take up other jobs to make ends meet.
