Sorvino was born in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bensonhurst in 1939, the son of an Italian immigrant father who worked in a robe factory and a homemaker mother who also taught piano. He aspired to be an opera singer, first performing in hotels in the Catskills, but asthma problems forced him to focus on acting.
