2. Aflatoxin poisoning

Peanuts can sometimes be contaminated with a species of mold (Aspergillus flavus) that produces aflatoxin.

The main symptoms of aflatoxin poisoning include loss of appetite and yellow discoloration of the eyes (jaundice), which are typical signs of liver problems. Serious aflatoxin poisoning can lead to liver failure and liver cancer.

Needless to say, unless you are eating peanut butter made from contaminated peanuts, this shouldn't be an issue to worry about. But it is something to keep in mind if you ever decide to consume homemade peanut butter without evaluating the peanuts.
