Red pepper flakes/chili flakes
- The makeup varies with the brand but is always a mix of peppers: cayenne pepper usually takes up most of the share.
- If your spice jar contains seeds in addition to crushed pepper flakes, it is used to achieve heat thanks to the seeds in the blend.
- If your spice jar contains only crushed pepper flakes, it is usually made from a single type of pepper and used to express the pepper's flavor.
- Substitute with cayenne pepper though it has a different texture.
