Tri-Union Seafoods Issues Recall of Select Genova®, Van Camp’s®, H-E-B and Trader Joe’s® Tuna Cans Due to Clostridium Botulinum Risk
  • Company: Tri-Union Seafoods
  • Product: Canned tuna
  • Status: active
  • Type: Tuna
  • Date: Feb 10, 2025
  • Reason: Potential Foodborne Illness - Botulism

Raleigh, N.C., Jan. 14, 2026 — Tri‑Union Seafoods has recalled select lots of canned tuna sold under the Genova, Van Camp’s, H‑E‑B and Trader Joe’s brands because a manufacturing defect in some easy‑open pull‑tab can lids may compromise the product seal, allowing leakage and potential contamination with Clostridium botulinum, a serious and potentially fatal toxin. Consumers are advised immediately to stop using the identified cans and not to eat the product even if it appears or smells normal; anyone feeling ill after consumption should seek medical attention. No illnesses have been reported to date and the voluntary recall is being conducted out of an abundance of caution to protect public health.

The recalled items include multiple product descriptions and lot code(s) printed on the bottom of the cans, including Genova Solid White and Yellowfin Tuna (various 5 oz, 7 oz and multi‑pack SKUs), Van Camp’s Solid Light Tuna 5 oz (single and 4‑pack), Trader Joe’s Solid White and Yellowfin Tuna varieties, and H‑E‑B Solid White Tuna 4‑pack; specific lot code(s) and “Best if Used By” dates are provided by the company for each SKU. Affected products have been sold online and at select U.S. retailers (including Costco, Kroger, Publix, Walmart, Harris Teeter, H‑E‑B, Trader Joe’s and other independent retailers) and have been sold since Sept. 15, 2025; consumers should check can bottoms for matching lot code(s) and UPCs against the company’s recall list.

Consumers who possess an affected can should not consume it and may return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund or dispose of it; Tri‑Union Seafoods also offers a retrieval kit and a coupon for replacement product upon request. To request a refund, replacement or retrieval kit, or for additional information, contact Tri‑Union Seafoods at [email protected] or call 833‑374‑0171 (Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. EST). If your product’s lot code(s) are not listed on the company recall page, consult the retailer or the company for guidance.
