Raleigh, N.C., Jan. 14, 2026 — El Abuelito Cheese of Paterson, N.J., has recalled all Queso Fresco (fresh, soft cheese) products because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly, pregnant people and those with weakened immune systems. Consumers are urged to stop using the products immediately and not to eat them; anyone who has symptoms consistent with listeriosis should seek medical attention.
The recall covers all Queso Fresco products with sell-by dates through 032821 and includes products sold under the El Abuelito Cheese, Rio Grande Food Products and Rio Lindo brands. Affected lot code(s) include, but are not limited to, Lot A027 (10 oz. packages marked with an expiration date of 02/26/2021) and other Queso Fresco lot code(s) produced at Plant #34-12179; specific UPCs and sizes range from 10 oz. and 12 oz. retail plastic containers to 5 lb. vacuum-packed formats. The cheeses have been distributed in CT, NJ, PA, NY, VA, NC and MD and have been sold online and at select U.S. retailers and supermarkets since at least Feb. 16, 2021.
Consumers who purchased the affected Queso Fresco should not eat the product and may return it to the place of purchase for a full refund or dispose of it following local guidance.
