The Coastal Companies Issues Voluntary Recall on Items with Fresh Start Cucumbers Due to the Potential for Salmonella Contamination
  • Company: The Coastal Companies
  • Product: Salads, salsas, and other products containing salsa containing fresh cucumbers
  • Status: active
  • Type: Cucumber
  • Date: May 27, 2025
  • Reason: Potential for Salmonella contamination.

Raleigh, N.C., Jan. 14, 2026 — The Coastal Companies have recalled 17 prepared-food products because cucumbers used in them, grown by Bedner Growers, Inc. and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales, Inc., may be contaminated with Salmonella. Consumers, restaurants, retailers and wholesalers should stop using the listed products immediately and do not eat or serve them; if you find the affected items, destroy the product and record the number of cases rather than returning them. To date, no illnesses have been linked to products distributed by The Coastal Companies, but the recall follows a broader FDA-linked cucumber investigation associated with illnesses in multiple states.

The recalled items include refrigerated salsas and prepared salads sold under several brands; all lot code(s) for each listed UPC and product description are affected. Examples include East Coast Fresh Fresh Mild Salsa (UPC 640344010282 and 640344012781, all lot code(s)), TOPS Fresh Salsa and Salsa HOT (UPCs 070784034140, 070784033846, all lot code(s)), Wellsley Farms Mild Salsa (UPC 888670065808, all lot code(s)), WEIS Salsa Mild (UPC 041497075959, all lot code(s)), AHOLD salsas (UPCs 688267031953, 688267032523, all lot code(s)), and multiple Created Fresh/Jack and Olive/Spring and Sprout salad and sandwich items (see manufacturer or retailer for full UPC list). The products have been sold online and at select U.S. retailers and foodservice locations and have been sold since May 6, 2025, through May 21, 2025, in multiple states including Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York-area distributors, and others.

Consumers with affected products should destroy them or follow guidance from the retailer for safe disposal and may request a refund or replacement from the place of purchase; do not attempt to return these items to stores unless instructed. Anyone who thinks they may be ill with Salmonella should seek medical attention. For questions or to report possession of recalled product, contact Coastal Sunbelt (The Coastal Companies) at [email protected] or call 410-133-8000; if you need additional details not provided here, check the FDA recall advisory or contact your retailer.
